If I would be the Nokia-CEO…

I think that the current situation is sad. The former world leader in smartphones has lost almost everything by the change from Symbian to Windows Phone. A solution to the crisis is hardly feasible in the current strategy, and there’s not much time left: When Nokia will have one billion euro loss/year and has about 5 billion cash reserves, the lights will turn off in the summer of 2013.
However, it is possible to come up with a total change, a return to the good side, back into the correct lane. In the following text, imagine ( ), I would have taken Stephen Elops position as the Nokia CEO and hold a keynote. We have the end of June 2012 and it is a short-term planned keynote.

A note: I do not know how the ideas presented here are possible, but it would be a way for Nokia to get out of the crisis…

Good morning everyone!
Today is one of the last chances for Nokia to find a way out of our dilemma with Symbian, MeeGo and Windows Phone. One of the last chances to make us stronger and take back the position in the smartphone market. One of the last chances to rescue millions of workers, app developers, communities and fans.

I’m not here today to tell you how wonderful Windows Phone 7 is. Because it’s something different, but there are many things you’re not able to do with it.
I’m also not here today to tell you how wonderful Symbian is. Of course it is very nice, but it’s hard to do further things with this huge part of code that’s running on your 701, N8 or 808. Sometimes it’s not running anymore…

When two people are fighting, in most cases the third wins. And the third one in this case is MeeGo. It’s the OS by Nokia that was accepted best by customers, consumers and testers. It, and here I only mean the Nokia N9, is still outselling our whole Lumia series.

So we thought about – and I will present you today – our second OS we will run in future next to Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 – it’s MeeGo 2.0.

MeeGo 2.0 is our future. It’s the best of both worlds, of Symbian Belle and MeeGo running on the N9. It has the intuitive user interface and the more wonderful user experience, but for example it allows you to create more homescreens, change their backgrounds and place widgets on them – just like on Symbian.

In MeeGo 2.0 you can also customize your menu homescreen: You can sort your apps in folders and subfolders, change the icons of apps, folders and subfolders. You can change the whole user interface with just some touches – many colors are preinstalled and themes for MeeGo 2.0 can be developed with the new version of Carbide.UI.

The biggest problem of MeeGo 1 was the small count of apps available on the Nokia Store. That’s history. To give developers and customers the best possibilities, MeeGo 2.0 allows you to run apps written natively for MeeGo, written in Qt, written in Symbian C++, written as a WRT, written in J2ME, written in Python – and, as you have seen on Samsung’s Tizen prototype – written in HTML5 and JavaScript.
That means, that with MeeGo 2.0 you’re able to run all Symbian apps, that are running on Belle, for example Jan Ole Suhr’s wonderful Twitter client Gravity. Without any changes by the developer. Just download the sisx-file and install it.
To make it easier for developers to integrate native functions of MeeGo 2.0, there will be special API’s available for Symbian C++ and J2ME.

But that’s not all. We are happy to announce partnerships with many developers, so that funny and useful apps will reach your MeeGo 2.0 phone – like Angry Birds Space, Draw Something, Plants vs. Zombies. Or more useful maybe the BurgerKing app or many many more.

To launch MeeGo 2.0 I’m happy to announce two smartphones today – the Nokia 920 and the Nokia 925. Both are running this wonderful platform, featuring more than 150.000 apps available from Nokia Store. Both have a 4.4 inch high definition gorilla glass-touchscreen (1280×720 pixel). Both have an intelligent quad-core-CPU. The processor knows, if you need two cores, or four, or only one (that’s the default) and turns off any others to safe battery. Both feature a nice unibody design, and four different colors – black, white, cyan and red. Both feature a 1 GB huge random access memory, WiFi, DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, micro-HDMI, a microSD card-input, fast internet via 4G/LTE, that will be available not only for America and Canada.
And both phones feature the possibility to watch TV on your way, via DVB-T, including TimeShift and recording functions.

So mixing WiFi, DLNA, microSD and DVB-T results in your mobile player, you can always connect without cables to your monitor to watch TV, offline movies or TV shows. And with dual-view your monitor is the TV set and your phone is the remote control.

The Nokia 920 and Nokia 925 also feature Microsoft Apps 3.0, featuring the presentator app. It uses dual-view, to display different things on the phone and on the monitor. Simply connect the WiFi-dongle to your beamer and you’re able to start your presentation. You see your notes on the phone, and of course you can switch the slide from here, and the listeners see your slides. To show something you can draw on the slide – or you use the in-built laser pointer.

Ok, so now you will ask what are differences between both new phones. The Nokia 920 is the successor of the N8, the N9, the C7, the 701, the 700 and the 603. And the Nokia 925 is the successor of the Nokia E7, because it features a full hardware keyboard.

There are still two things related to the phones missing. First is the camera. And you don’t see it, but it’s full PureView technology. 31 megapixels, Carl Zeiss, dual-LED flashlight, Full-HD video recording with DolbyDigital Plus. And there’s a 3.2 megapixel front camera that you can use to talk with your friends, for example through the new Skype.

Second is the battery and that’s another revolution. Maybe you heard about on of our patents for a self-loading battery at the beginning of the year. Well, now that’s no future anymore, that’s present! With every move of your phone small plates in the battery will move, too. And create kinetic energy that will charge your phone.
To show you an example: I’m using a prototype of the Nokia 920 since one week, for Twitter via Gravity, Facebook via fMobi, YouTube, calls, text messages, push emails, some games and music. And I didn’t had to charge the phone since one week! Isn’t that amazing?
If there should be any reason to charge your phone, you can do this by two ways: The “normal” one with a cable and a charger, and the second one with the wireless charging kit.

So the main questions now are When? and How expensive?. The Nokia 920 and Nokia 925 will reach the most important markets, Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, USA, Canada, China, Russia and Japan by the first August week, followed by 25 other countries at the beginning of October.
The Nokia 920 will be available for 469 euros in Germany, and you will have to pay 499 euros for the Nokia 925, both with 8 GB memory. Other prices will be nearly the same.

Now to our older customers. We don’t know which of the language developers will select to develop their apps for MeeGo 2.0, in worst case for a 701 user that’s native MeeGo. But it will not be interesting for you, as the latest (and last) real Symbian smartphones and the first generation Symbian smartphones will get MeeGo 2.0 Lite. This version will feature the basic UI and user experience of MeeGo 2.0 and the ability to run the most apps developed for MeeGo 2.0.
The updates for Nokia 603, 700, 701 and 808 PureView will be available in the mid of August, while user of an N8, C7, E7, X7 and 500 will get the update at the end of September.
Customers with an N9 will get the full version of MeeGo 2.0 in about two weeks as an update.
But of course you will get the best experience of MeeGo 2.0, when running it on the Nokia 920 or Nokia 925…

Die ersten Fahrtage der St. Augustiner Modellbahner im 3. Stock

Zwei Tage am Stück rangieren, steuern und schalten – zu “Troisdorf Mobil” und dem damit verbundenen verkaufsoffenen Sonntag öffneten die St. Augustiner Modellbahner (zu denen ich mich zählen darf) ihre Pforten. Ganz besonders waren diese Tage, weil es die ersten Fahrtage nach dem Umzug in den dritten Stock im Januar waren und zum ersten Mal alle Anlagen liefen.

Zusammen gerechnet gab es sechs verschiedene Gleistypen, von der H0-Märklin-Digitalanlage, die heute zum ersten Mal in den Regelbetrieb ging, über die H0-Gleichstromanlage inklusive einer Schmalspurstrecke, die auch seit dem Umbau erweitert wurde, eine kleine TT-Anlage aus originalen Rokal-Teilen aus den 70ern und 80ern, die mittlerweile über 50 Meter lange N-Strecke mit halbwegs funktionierender “Y”-Kreuzung, bis hin zu zwei Z-Anlagen, von denen allerdings bisher nur eine fahrtüchtig war.

Was das Fahrmaterial angeht, ging es international zu. Neben diversen Epochen der deutschen Eisenbahngeschichte gab es auch den einen oder anderen Zug aus Österreich, der Schweiz, Polen und Frankreich.

Neben der eigentlichen Strecke wurde aber auch gebaut. Unser Malermeister Jens verwirklicht gegenüber den Kinderspielanlagen seine eigene kleine Welt im Maßstab 1:160, die an die Hauptanlage angeschlossen wird, an anderer Stelle arbeitet Bert an der Umsetzung des Hamburger Hafens im gleichen Maßstab.

Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagend, dass die Anlagen auf der rund 2200qm großen Fläche sehr beeindruckend sind, jedoch an manchen sehr empfindlichen Stellen einige Korrekturen nötig sind, damit diese auch wirklich reibungslos funktionieren.
Wer sich die Anlagen anschauen möchte, kann dies jeden Samstag im Troisdorfer Forum tun, und zwar zwischen 11:00 und 13:00 und zwischen 14:00 und 17:00. Gefahren wird dabei im dritten Stock, welcher über das Treppenhaus oder das Parkdeck 6a erreichbar ist. Die ÖPNV-Verbindung ist über die Buslinien 501, 503, 507 und 508 gegeben, bei schönem Wetter ist das Erreichen der kostenlosen Ausstellung über den Troisdorfer Bahnhof und die Fußgängerzone möglich.

Nokia Belle FP1: First impressions

Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1 is available only since a few hours for the devices 701 and 603, but somewhere there was a need to test this already. My first impressions:

• The system performance was improved, probably by increasing the clock frequency of 1.0 to 1.3 GHz. The scrolling in the menus and the main app menu is now a dream, so smooth as never before on a Symbian phone.
• Also the new widgets are part of the update, even though I’m not sure if these are really 20 (I’m too lazy to count them now ). Especially notable was for me the little widget that shows the used data volume (see screenshot).
• Everywhere you’ll find now the new menu design you should know already from some Qt apps. I liked the earlier version more, but it is ok.
• You’ll find now also the new animations between starting apps, menu, changing the app, etc pp. It now looks much more “professional”.
• What was seemingly solved also, is the light-bug, where the background light is normal, then getting brighter, and first then switching off (actually, it would be right: normal – darker – off)

• Little things that have changed but doesn’t look to good are the new symbol for 3.5G connection, and the larger font on the shortcuts on the homescreen.
• The new task manager is really nice, displaying now a full screenshot of every app, and not only an excerpt as before FP1.
• A real disappointment is in my opinion the new browser version (8.2), which has become much more slowly than before. Also I miss the old simple menu view in the browser.
• I do not know if it was already there before, however, I never noticed: In Belle FP1 you can now select between four different shutter sounds for the camera or disable the sound completely (see photo).

Things that were not done / should be done:

• The resurrection of the music player, with search capability, sorting by artist, some parts of it were already visible in the leaked Carla screens.
• A revision of the dictionary, so that the switch between the languages ​​does not require thousands of steps.

F1uptodate ab sofort im Nokia Store verfügbar

After about three weeks of development time I finished F1uptodate, and today the app has reached the Nokia Store. There, it can be downloaded by owners of a Symbian-smartphone with Symbian ^3, Anna or Belle, if your phone has a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels (in portrait mode, for example, Nokia N8, X7 or 701). More smartphones will be added with future versions.

F1uptodate is the perfect app if you want to follow the Formula 1 season 2012 with your Symbian smartphone. You can access the following content with the app:

Nokia Lumia 720 Tile: Windows Phone with new design

In the fourth quarter Nokia will be presenting with Microsoft a major update of Windows Phone, along with the new PC-system Windows 8. Until then, the two companies want to keep the consumer with new updates in a good mood.
This time the update is actually so great that Nokia has decided to introduce a new smartphone, namely the Nokia Lumia 720 Tile. It remembers of the look of the 701, however it has Windows Phone 7.7 on board. These completely unreleased version can be recognized directly because of the major design update.

The Tiles, now literally

Windows Phone 7 is composed of so-called live tiles, tiles that update themselves automatically and view current content. Tiles can be also the tiles, you know from the bathroom, and the developers have taken this to heart, as can be seen directly on the leaked photo.
The update features also some cool new apps: The app “Snow” let’s it snow from your phone (there is below a gap that opens up); but the 720 Tile also has all needed catering requirements, as you can insert instead of water also Powder sugar or salt pour.
In addition, there is also Angry Birds Space preinstalled and completely free of charge, although Rovio did not wanted to publish a version for Windows Phone at the beginning.

Cooler integrated

For the snow effect in the 720 Tile special hardware was installed that allows the freezing of water into snow. Therefore, users should note two things here:

a) The 720 Tile does not has the problems of the new iPad. As it doesn’t reach around 50 degree, you cannot do you egg with it, but it can be used to cool drinks as the temperature of the phone can reach minus 5 degree.
b) The 720 Tile can become very cold (see a) ). Nokia therefore will take part in the textile industry and will offer to the market launch of the 720 Tile stylish gloves in the new tile.

Average hardware

A 1.4-GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, a 3.5 inch display, WiFi, Bluetooth and a 5 megapixel camera can be listed as the other equipment.

The Nokia Lumia 720 Tile will probably be presented in the summer, because the cooling effect can be demonstrated with a glass of lemonade best in this time. The Finnish company also is negotiating with the drivers from “Ice Road Truckers” to start with them with a promotional campaign for the smartphone.

GTA Real Life, Bro!

Ich bin eher das Gegenteil eines Hardcore-Spielers, so gehören zu meinen Lieblingsspielen eher Simulatoren und Aufbauspiele als gewaltvolle Games. Allerdings bin ich neulich im World Wide Web auf etwas ganz lustiges gestoßen, was einigen vielleicht den Humor am Montag verbessern könnte.

Konkret geht es um eine Version des erfolgreichen Spiels “Grand Theft Auto”, dessen fünfte Version sich bald ankündigen wird. Die Macher der folgenden drei Videos, Y-TITTY, haben das Spiel allerdings nicht auf dem PC, sondern im wahren Leben (Real life) nachgespielt, inklusive aller Bugs, die die Originalversion so an sich hat.

Ich kann jedem nur empfehlen, auch wenn ihr kein GTA-Fan seid, sich folgende Videos einmal anzuschauen

Windows 8 Consumer Preview: Apps

Im dritten Teil der Windows 8-Reihe gehe ich heute auf die vorinstallierten und verfügbaren Apps ein, die sich alle noch in der Beta-Phase befinden. Konkret geht es um insgesamt fünf Apps, die den Weg in die Metro-Oberfläche bereits gefunden haben, beziehungsweise komplett neu programmiert wurden.

Finance

Die erste App ist für Börsianer und Wirtschaftsbegeisterte gedacht, denn sie zeigt aktuelle Börsenkurse und -nachrichten an. Die Bedienung geht, wie bei Windows 8, sehr einfach, wenn man es einmal raus hat, die angezeigten Börsenkurse ließen sich aber weder modifizieren, noch die Sprache auf Deutsch oder etwas anderes als Englisch umstellen.

Fotos

Fotos dient zur Verwaltung aller Bilder. Dabei greift die App auch auf Facebook und Flickr zurück, wenn entsprechende Login-Daten eingegeben wurden. Große Unterschiede im Vergleich zu der auf der BUILD 2011 mit der Developer Preview vorgestellten App gibt es allerdings nicht. Die App ließe sich optimieren, wenn man eigene Foto-Ordner hinzufügen könnte, was nicht der Fall ist.

Maps

Maps greift auf die Daten von Bing Maps zurück, daher ist die Farbgebung auch so “merkwürdig” und könnte an den Standard ruhig noch angepasst werden. Abgesehen davon zeigt die App Bahn- und Zugbahnhöfe an (wobei die Bonner U-Bahn hier noch das Metro-Icon hat), sowie eine Verkehrsanzeige. Daneben ist auch noch eine 3D-Ansicht möglich, ich würde schnellstmöglichst Google Maps nachinstallieren, einfach weil mich violette Autobahnen sehr stören…

Mail

Mit der Mail-App bietet Microsoft endlich eine vorinstallierte Alternative zum etwas in die Jahre gekommenen Outlook Express. Die Anzeige ist sehr einfach gehalten, Darstellungsfehler konnten weder bei Text- noch bei HTML-Nachrichten festgestellt werden.
Allerdings kommt man sehr schnell beim Scrollen durcheinander, da mit dem Mausrad aus unerklärlichen Gründen immer im zuletzt geklickten Fenster gescrollt wird – und nicht, da wo der Cursor gerade drüber ist. Außerdem konnte ich bisher nur meinen Hotmail-Account hinzufügen.

Kamera

Da Windows 8 ja für Tablets gedacht und gemacht ist, gibt es auch eine Kamera-App. Da ich aber keine Webcam habe (bis auf die in meinem Netbook) sah das Bild wie folgt aus :

Cut the Rope: Ab sofort für Nokia Belle verfügbar

Nach etwas längerer Wartezeit hat das bereits bekannte Kultspiel Cut the Rope endlich auch den Nokia Store für Symbian Belle erreicht. Die App war schon länger verfügbar, allerdings nicht für die neueste Betriebssystem Symbian Belle.

Die Symbian-Version unterscheidet sich nicht von den Versionen für andere Systeme, wie iOS oder Android, kostet aber etwas mehr. So werden beim Kauf 2,99 Euro fällig, während die iPhone-Variante nur mit 0,79 Cent zu Buche schlägt.

In Cut the Rope muss man dem kleinen, sehr süßen “Monster” Om Nom die Süßigkeit über ein Seilsystem überbringen und dabei möglichst alle Sterne sammeln (je Level 3). Das Spiel besteht aus sieben “Boxen”, die jeweils 25 Level haben. Ein langer Spielspaß durch abwechslungsreiche Aufgaben ist damit garantiert und rechtfertigt den Preis.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview: Die Bedienung

Programme gab es gestern – mittlerweile läuft fast alles über Apps, so auch Windows 8. Daher schauen wir uns im dritten Teil des Windows 8 Consumer Preview-Reviews ( ) einige der vorinstallierten Apps in Windows 8 an. Heute geht es allerdings noch ein bisschen um die Bedienung, die bereits angeschnitten wurde:

Nach einigen Apps sollte sich eurer Startscreen nach und nach füllen. Hier liegt ein großes Plus bei Windows 8 mit den so genannten Live Tiles: Sie zeigen euch wichtige Infos an, noch bevor ihr die App startet, was euch manchmal sogar das Starten ersparen kann. Als Beispiel sei hier nun die Wetter-App genannt, die das aktuelle Wetter in “ihrer” Kachel anzeigt:

Die linken zwei Ecken eures Monitors (ich hatte keine Möglichkeit, die Consumer Preview auf einem Tablet zu testen, oder gar einem 82 Zoll-Touchscreen, wie auf dem MWC) sind ein Teil der Taskleiste. Navigiert ihr mit dem Cursor in die untere Ecke, führt sie euch immer zu diesem Startscreen zurück. Im Gegensatz dazu kommt ihr mit der oberen linken Ecke zur zuletzt genutzten App. Geht ihr in einer der beiden Ecken, aber statt zu klicken, ein Stück hoch (bzw. von der oberen Ecke runter), erscheint eine ganze Leiste mit allen offenen Apps inkl. Vorschau, die ihr Öffnen oder Schließen (Rechtsklick) könnt.

Die rechten Ecken ergänzen die Taskleiste zu dem, wie sie aus Windows 95 aufwärts bekannt ist. Das Startmenu-Icon, die Uhrzeit sowie diverse Icons, die euch Infos über Lautstärke, WLAN-Verbindung, etc geben, finden sich dort. In welche rechte Ecke man geht, ist völlig egal (nur in die Ecke mit dem Cursor, nicht klicken!), dann findet ihr folgende kleine Leiste vor, bei der euch das Zahnrad zu dem eben genannten führt:

Solltet ihr in der unteren Ecke doch geklickt haben, seid ihr viel größer geworden – oder die Kacheln viel kleiner:

Der letzte Hinweis ist ein altbewährter. Wer sich in der Metro-UI umschaut, wird einige Apps vermissen. Dies liegt daran, dass sich hier zum größten Teil nur die befinden, die an die neue Oberfläche (bereits) angepasst wurden. Klickt man nun irgendwo im Startscreen mit der linken Maustaste, so erscheint diesmal unten eine Leiste, die diverse Einstellungen oder Optionen bietet – oder hier einen Weg zu allen Apps:

Einmal draufgeklickt (diesmal mit links), und voila, kommen direkt viele aus Windows 7 und vorher bekannte Programme zum Vorschein, die sich meist in der Desktop-App öffnen) :

Windows 8 Consumer Preview: Installieren, Starten, Bedienen, Herunterfahren & erster Eindruck

Seit nun rund 27 Stunden kann jeder die neue Beta von Windows 8 herunterladen und installieren. Bei der Installation sollten vor allem Nicht-PC-Freaks einiges beachten, damit das bereits installierte Windows 7 noch genutzt werden kann, daher werde ich heute auf die Grundfunktionen des Systems eingehen. Apps, der Windows Store und ein Schluss-Fazit werden in den nächsten Tagen folgen.

Die Installation

Von der offiziellen Seite gilt es zuerst, die Beta als ISO herunterzuladen. Idealerweise tut man dies gleich auf Deutsch, sollte der eigene PC mehr als 2 Gigabyte RAM haben, ist die 64bit-Version empfehlenswert. Nach dem Download wird die ISO auf eine DVD gebrannt oder daraus ein bootfähiger USB-Stick erstellt, und schon kann es losgehen. Read more »
